Geraci and Favre ride high on the roller-coaster of the Ardennes!

The demanding Belgian race track serves up a thrilling driving experience in the Alpine single-seater and is therefore one the most eagerly awaited meetings of the year for the drivers. The line-up in Spa featured twenty-four drivers, including three newcomers but it was Enzo Geraci, winner last time out at Magny-Cours, who was the first to strut his stuff, as he grabbed pole position for race one. He showed no signs of nerves in the race itself either, holding off Lorens Lecertua and Alexis Garcin to claim victory, the three drivers making it an all-Chazel Technologie Course Junior podium. However, Romain Favre took pole in the second contest before going on to win the race, finishing ahead of Alexis Garcin and Lorens Lecertua. It was his first win and the maiden victory of VPS Racing, the team founded by Matthieu Vaxiviere, Aurélien Panis and Raphaël Serrano.

Meanwhile, Geraci drew a blank after spinning at the exit to Blanchimont but he remains top of the provisional championship standings. “This second win is confirmation of our good start to the season,” commented Geraci, focusing on the positives. “We’ve been working well with the team to have the fastest car possible, and I have been training on the simulator so I'm ready and feel sharp when I get the behind the wheel. I think this approach has paid dividends despite some difficult races with several restarts and some very disputed racing with my team-mates, but I have come away with another win before we head to Dijon.” Indeed, next up for the Alpine Elf Europa Cup is a trip to the south of France, with round four being held at the Dijon-Prenois race track on 16-18 June.

Championship update

Despite failing to register any points on Sunday, Enzo Geraci – largely thanks to winning his second race of the season on Saturday – still tops the Alpine Elf Europa Cup standings. However, his lead over his nearest challenger, Romain Favre, has been cut to nine points. Meanwhile, Adrien Catelin has moved clear in the Challengers’ class, as has Chazel Technologie Course Junior in the teams’ standings. Lastly, Alain Jacono’s consistency means that he leads the Gentlemen Drivers’ class.
